On Oct 13 a network degradation occurred causing serious reduction in subscribed speeds. After troubleshooting it was found to be caused by rampant W32.Nachi worms from unpatched Windows2000 and WindowsXP machines. This was effectively ping flooding the RTC network and causing rippling outages, mostly on our wireless networks.

As of 4:30 PM Oct 14, 2003 the Nachi worm has been temporarily disabled by disabling ping requests throughout the network. At midnight on Oct 14 our core router will be upgraded to permanently disallow traffic from this worm and restore normal ping requests for trace routes and gamers.

We installed an significant upgrade to Spamhunter the weekend of June 15th. Users should now see .2% of junk mail in their inbox with only .05% false positives. This means that junk email (including image only advertisements) should be almost completely gone from a users Inbox with only a very, very small chance of a message not being junk email.

Happy emailing! :-)

We had to open the floodgates one last time last night to allow backed up email to be delivered. We now have two machines handling mail flow. Inbound mail is being filtered by our new dual 2.2GHz Xeon system and outbound mail is being filtered by our old dual 512 MHz PIII system. With the new configuration, mail flow can maintained without problems, even if we do get plowed by spammers. Happy emailing!

Spammers blasted us again last night. We have a huge backlog of emails. We have turned off virus scanning to compensate and to work through the backlog faster. The new hunter machine arrives next week. Expect delays in excess of one or two hours.

UPDATE 16:08 7/11 - Still backlogged. Turned off filtering AND scanning to push them through. Probably 5:00 or 5:30 PM before things are back to normal. Until another damn spammer hits us with a ton of email. Come on tuesday...

Spamhunter is currently backlogged due to a problem we are tracking. Inbound and outbound mail delivery will be delayed by at least an hour.

Update 11:27 - The slowdown was caused by an unusually massive amount of mail from spammers during the night last night. Nothing can be done to prevent this, unfortunately but we are looking at ways to speed up recovery from these type of incidents. In the meantime, it will probably be tonight before the delivery delays go away.

Due to a problem with Spamhunter, email that was delivered between the hours of 8:00 PM June 18, 2002 and 8:20 AM June 19, 2002 was not correctly marked as Junk Mail and was delivered normally without being scanned. We know what the problem was and it should not happen again. In addition, whitelists and virus scanning management have been repaired. All features of SpamHunter are back online now.
